What I Learned About Categories and Tags

Categories and tags are a foundational way of creating structure for website content and ease of topic discovery. Using categories to separate steps in video creation and tags to find different aspects of tasks in the process make it easy for users to go straight to what they need to learn more about.

Categories are a way of providing structure to make it easier for users to discover certain types of content they are interested in. They can also have a hierarchy with different subcategories that live within main categories. This allows users to get even more specific about content they desire to view and provides even more detail for more complex categories that could have a variety of things involved.

Tags are an easy way to identify topics that are covered in a blog. They are typically short, no more than one or two words. This makes it easy for users to discover specific ideas or concepts that are involved in a post and easily discover over posts that also contain similar topics. A differentiator of tags compared to categories is they are less focused on providing organization of blog content and more on specific topics covered in them.

For my website topic (creating high quality videos for beginners), categories will be used to organize the structure/steps of creating videos. Ideas for categories are research, scripting, set production, audio engineering, and post production. Examples of tags that will be used are color, audio, lighting, contrast, noise reduction, gear, setup, voiceover, etc. These categories and tags will make it much easier for users to quickly discover specific learning steps or details/topics covered in various parts of the video production process.
