Proper Storage Planning

It’s easy to overlook file storage when just starting out on your video production journey. However, you’ll eventually run into a memory card failing or a hard drive that stops working. This could cause drastic loss like an entire week of filming. Video files consume significant space compared to other common file formats. Most beginners don’t realize this and the problem can only get worse over time as projects become more ambitious. Planning for storage may not be an exciting aspect of production, but it’s one of the most important to keep in mind early on.

The good news is you don’t need anything complicated to begin saving your work. A good rule of thumb is to never keep a singular copy of your footage or keep it in a single location. This means backing up files to external drives after a video shoot or copying projects onto your computer itself. It’s also a good idea to use cloud/sync storage plans too. The more projects you start the greater your storage solution will need to be.

The important thing to remember is that regardless of your expertise, it’s necessary to have a good storage system before you face bad situations of data loss. It needs to be established before something goes wrong. Losing even one video shoot can be a hard lesson of something that could be avoided with proper planning in advance.
